MNet Review

What goes into the making of a music video? Accomplished U.S. filmmaker Les Blank turns his camera on the other cameras to document what transpired during the shooting of a Huey Lewis video, based on his hit song "Stuck on You." Filmed on location in the Bahamas, Huey Lewis and the News: Before is an entertaining look at the process of constructing the video - including flubbed takes and late-night run-throughs of the next day's shooting. Besides being an enjoyable portrayal of the process, Huey Lewis also raises questions about the role of women in rock videos, the use of rock videos to escape reality, and the ways those native to a place might look at tourists. This film would be useful in high school courses having to do with communication, video production techniques and/or media and society. (However, there are some instances of profanity in the video.)
