Alberta Press Council

The Alberta Press Council is an independent voluntary body that serves to protect the public's right to full, fair and accurate news reporting in the province. The Press Council reviews any complaints from the public about the conduct and performances of Alberta's weekly and daily newspapers.

The council encourages high professional standards of journalism, and attempts to both preserve the freedom of the press and provide a forum for greater understanding.

The Press Council’s objectives are:

  • to preserve the freedom of the press
  • to serve as a medium of understanding between the public and the press
  • to encourage the highest ethical standards of journalism
  • to consider any complaints about the conduct of the press in the gathering and publication of news, opinion and advertising, and to report its findings publicly
  • to make representations to governments and other bodies on matters related to the function of the press
  • to review and report on attempts to restrict access to public information
