PROFILE

British Columbia Press Council

The B.C. Press Council is a self-regulatory body that governs the newspaper industry in British Columbia. It was established in 1983 with two main aims: to promote ethical practices within the province's newspaper community, and to serve as a forum for any complaints against its members.

In the belief that vigilant self-regulation is the hallmark of a free and responsible press, the council has created a Code of Practice for journalists in order to encourage high professional and ethical standards.

The press council encourages members of the public to go to the offending publications first with any complains about the gathering and publication of news and opinion. It will then consider any "unsatisfied" complaints about the conduct of its member newspapers. Its directors oversee the mediation of such complaints, with input and response from both the newspaper and the complainant.
