PROFILE

Manitoba Press Council

The Manitoba Press Council is an independent non-judicial body that seeks to promote high-quality journalism in Manitoba's daily and community newspapers. Its objectives include preserving the established freedom of the press; encouraging understanding between the public and the press; and reviewing complaints from the public about the conduct of the press.

The Manitoba Press Council considers all complaints brought to it by the public, except those in which legal action is involved or is contemplated; or those involving newspapers that are not members of the Council.

The Council has nine directors – four professional members drawn from the newspaper industry, and five members (including the chairperson) representing communities throughout Manitoba.
