For young teens, the Internet is a place where they can develop and connect to online communities and explore ideas that are outside real-world boundaries. The five Web sites most frequently mentioned by this age group in Young Canadians In A Wired World: The Students' View are:
Boys:

- Both sexes are unanimous in choosing hotmail.com, yahoo.com and napster.com as their three favourite Web sites. Hotmail.com received nearly twice as many votes as yahoo.com, and almost three times as many votes as napster.com.
- Girls are more likely than boys to identify hotmail.com as a favourite site, with both sexes equally matched in votes for napster.com.
- Girls outpace boys when it comes to socializing online, being twice as likely to mention instant messaging Web sites and three times more likely to mention chat sites in their list of favourites.
- In addition to communicating online and downloading games and music, visiting sports-related Web sites is the third most popular online activity for boys.
- Girls at this age are three times more likely to include culture-specific portals like asianavenue.com in their favourites.
- Boys at this age are more likely to push the boundaries online. Four times as many boys as girls list attitude-laden humour, gore, or explicit adult sites as favourites.
