Take Action on Advertising and Marketing
If consumers are bothered by offensive or intrusive advertising, it’s important that they voice their opinions to the industry. Canadian advertisers follow a set of voluntary codes and guidelines. The industry organization Advertising Standards Canada (ASC) is responsible for administering these codes and dealing with complaints from the public. See the right sidebar for information on Canadian advertising codes.
To comment on a print advertisement:
- Contact the company whose products or services are being advertised.
- Contact the magazine or newspaper the ad appeared in, and the company that owns the publication. Enclose a copy of the offending advertisement.
- If the publication is Canadian, you should also contact Advertising Standards Canada via the complaint form on its Web site.
To comment on a TV or radio commercial:
- Contact the company whose products or services are being advertised.
- Contact the station that aired the commercial.
- If the publication is Canadian, you should also contact Advertising Standards Canada or the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, via the complaint forms on both organizations’ Web sites.
- When making a complaint about an ad on TV or radio, you should provide information on what station broadcast the ad; when it aired (the date and approximate time); and the name of the product involved.
To comment on an advertisement involving alcohol:
- For TV or radio commercials, contact Advertising Standards Canada via the complaint form on its Web site.
- Contact the alcohol company whose product is being advertised.
To comment on a billboard or other public display:
- Contact the company whose products or services are being advertised.
- Contact Advertising Standards Canada via the complaint form on its Web site.
- Contact your municipal government.
To comment on unsolicited direct marketing:
- To complain about unsolicited direct marketing – including junk mail, junk e-mail (spam), phone calls and faxes – you should contact the Canadian Marketing Association.You should also report junk e-mail (spam) to your Internet service provider.
To comment on advertising in schools:
- Contact the school administration, and your school trustee. As well, use the tip sheet Making Your School a Commercial-Free Zone (see right sidebar) for ideas on how to keep advertising out of schools.
To comment on ads or previews for adult or teen-rated movies shown during children's movies, or on children's TV:
- If the preview is shown at a theatre during a movie meant for a younger audience, complain to the theatre management.
- If the ad is shown on TV during programming meant for younger children, contact the TV station and the advertiser in question. You should also send your comments to Advertising Standards Canada and the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, using the complaint forms on their Web sites.
