Professional Resources - Introduction

The Internet has presented library staff with the challenge of offering an effective, equitable and sustainable service to everyone. To meet this challenge, this section presents the following professional resources:

  • Guidelines for developing an Internet use policy for the library

  • Communication tools to promote the safe, responsible and savvy use of the Internet at the library to the public and the media

In addition, this section provides links to information about the Web Awareness Workshops Series for Librarians, a professional development resource with information about cybermarketing, Internet safety, privacy and the authentication of online information.

Do you want to develop an Internet use policy, with references to the appropriate laws, that promotes safe and responsible use of the Internet? In this section, we provide guidelines for doing this. Learn about the challenges surrounding the use of filters on computers and consult the Best Practices section for additional suggestions on how best to manage the Internet at the library.

Do you want to organize workshops, promote activities for parents and young people or inform the public and the media about the challenges involved in young people's use of the Internet? We direct you to a toolkit of information and resources such as tip sheets, posters, pamphlets, handouts and fact sheets.
